This topic is something which I have been thinking to write from really loooong time. Mostly when I’m at home. Didn’t write then because, at those times, I’ll be exceptionally lazy to sit down and type B)
Before I start, let me make one thing clear. This article is NOT about any religion or religious matters. It is just about the way media are manipulating religious interests of people just to get maximum rating and viewer-ship. Yeah I can feel that you are getting to it, its all about the devotional soap operas which are the next big things in our mallu tv channels like Surya and Asianet after the highly dramatic reality shows.
It started with Kadamattathu Katthanaar I guess, was that in Asianet or Surya? Asianet right? That became a new trend in mega serial rating wars. Then Surya Tv had to do something seriously to pull back their viewers. They started the Sree Guruvayurappan serial. This was a deadly step taken by them. After that can anybody tell me how many Spiritual Serials were made in both the channels for preventing the audience from changing the channel? Sree Guruvaayurappan, Swamy Ayyappan, Devi Mahathmyam, Velankanni Matha, Sri Mahabhagavatham, Sree Krishna, Alfonsamma… OMG I get a headache when I just thinking about it. All these serials claim to be promising spiritual relief to adults by showering gods blessings over them and all. Spreading religious awareness and making a better society blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Let me ask you one thing? Isn’t it just a mere media stunt to maintain their TV ratings? They start in a purely devotional story line, Eventually we will find out the miraculous shift from being devotional to the level of emotional soap operas in which the female actors use a lot of glycerin and cry like they are born only for crying and make others cry. Its just really stupid!
In some cases people literally fall in feet of the so called “divine avatars” when they happen to see them somewhere. Does all this make any sense? Is there any logic in falling in feet of the kid who played the role of Sri Krishna or Swamy Ayyappan when they go somewhere? Yeah they should be complemented till some extent as they are actors, but blind worship? Its not at all good.
There is no doubt that real motive behind the so called attempts by television channels showing such devotional “SOAP OPERAS” is ultimately the TV Ratings. They are using these stupid programmes for coming first in rating chart and exploiting the stupidity of the viewers who are just glued into TV sets till the serials get over. If they use that time for praying in Puja Room, it will atleast get them triple the amount of blessing than what they will get by watching those good for nothing shows.
P.S : I’m not saying completely against the devotional serials, I’m still a fan of the old Mahabharata, Sri Krishna and stuff like that made by the legend Ramanand Sagar. They are purely based on epics and these present day devotional stuff are just shit when compared to them.
