This is a really competitive era right? In all the fields of life you can see competition only, let it be studies, career, the race to make a living everywhere. When it comes to production and distribution field, god! competition is the only thing there which will help you survive and stay long in the market. I’ve a special liking to the ads and all which appear in television, the innovative ways they choose to promote their products is just awesome. Some of them are really weird too… Now let me come to the topic here, this post is not about television ads but about the marketing methods I came across by various means. Found them really unusual so just noting them down
Marketing – Spiritualized!!!
This is the one which made me really surprised. Few months back when I went to Thiruvangaud Temple at thalassery I found that they literally got “!dea”. Just like Junior Bachan says “Get !dea” Whole place was filled with !dea’s yellow boards. It was like “!dea Thiruvangad Sreerama Swamy Temple“, “!dea Thiruvangad Sreerama Swamy Temple Agrasala“, “!dea Prasadom Counter” It was like either !dea decided to sponsor Lord himself or Lord Sree Rama decided to sponsor !dea… I was like ‘What The’?
I mean what is it? A temple which is really famous all over malabar region sponsoring a company like !dea obtaining huge amount of money (You can imagine how big it’ll be after seeing the level of penetration of !dea in the premises, people will notice !dea minimum fifty times while submitting their wishlist and their grievances report to the lord. Check out the sample picture of the same below.) and giving them the boost like nobody ever will give (In the name of lord, I give you an !dea
) and letting them convert it into a source of income of huge amount?
Temples are supposed to be places of peace, self realization and enlightment, now I know they also got a proper way to provide advertisements too… A new way of devotional marketing you can say… Till then the only means of marketing which I came across in divine places like this is firms giving sponsorship and all when it is festival seasons and all and making their name come on hoardings, notice etc which will be out of the picture soon after festivals are over. This? This is more like !dea took a “Life Time Offer” themselves
The !dea Of DoCoMo
Ok now lets move on to another instance which made me surprised a lot, its about another mobile service providor itself and they’re Tata Docomo… My friends know that I’m a loyal subscriber of Tata Docomo and also a source of permanent income for them
, we all know that stiff competition is there between mobile operators in giving their subscribers latest offers and all to keep them under control right? A few months back, I got an sms from Tata Docomo, when I saw that name itself I was sure that its just another FTT or Caller Tune or something like that, anyways I just thought to check it out and I just couldn’t stop laughing reading it.. It Said…
“Sex education on phone! Dial *567*7#.
Rs 10/10 Days.“
What is this? Sex education through phone? LOL
Yeah it is a relevant topic for todays teen and youth but, what all about sex can be taught through phone? To which extent? What is the syllabus? Will there be any practical sessions or it’ll be only theory based?
Just look at the range of topics they choose for their promotion? Sports, Movies, News, Spirituality, Friendship and now “SEX”. I’m borrowing !dea’s tagline here, “What an !dea Sirji”
Self Promotion Stunt
Another instant which I had witnessed a few days back is a self promo trick an institution had took just for getting students for their firm. Recently I went to a Job Fair at Kannur to catch up with my buddies from college, I happened to be in town at that time and decided to drop by, when I reached there, saw a huge crowd of BTech, Diploma people waiting for their chance to get verified from some so n so… Few people had reached there in early morning itself and there was a man in front of the counter where verification is to be done, even after seeing the huge queue waiting for him to get to work, he was sitting like a stone with his eyes glued to some distant point.
After an hour by gods grace, he showed signs of LIFE… He started verifying and people were directed to another queue for their chance of attending interview. In the mean time I just roamed around the place to see details of participating companies. There was no information about the companies recruiting from there and only thing I could see was a set of posters which tell you the benefit of studying CISCO’s n Microsoft’s various certification courses. I was puzzled and casually googled about the institute, then the picture became clear, I saw that this very institution was specialized in offering Cisco n Microsoft certificate courses! I could hear the institute’s volunteers repeatedly asking for people with the Cisco n Microsoft certifications when there were only five to six people having them.
In the meantime one of my friends got out after interview and said this the most pathetic job fair he ever attended. He said no name of the company was displayed there itself and the people too didn’t seem to be of hi tech firms, just two bpo’s poster was shown here and there. Funny thing is that his interview in that counter lasted only less than five mins but he was not getting out even after half an hour. I went around again and saw that he was at another counter, thinking that it is of some other company I waited and when he was out finally I asked what was going on there?
He said it was a feedback counter only and not interview for some company… I was puzzled and what the hell? It took nearly half an hour to give a feedback? He smiled and said even though it was feedback session, the main thing discussed there was the details of courses offered by them on Microsoft and Cisco certifications. They were not at all concentrated in successful completion of job fair but they were really busy in wooing the attendees in taking up the certificate courses saying that the’ll ensure a perfect life for the students if they join! What is this? A cheap promo trick playing with the people who try to get a job with their existing qualifications eventually breaking their confidence for attending future interviews and all? They might get a few students for their cousre and required publicity, but is that right to do this?
